Concave

Here is a pic of how I shaped some concave on my model “Moon”.

Almost all of my handplanes have single concave around entry rocker area to grab water followed by double concave running through to the tail.
I gave different depth, length and combination seeking to achieve highest planing effect. I love test rides.

3 day exhibit / thank you Taro!

My old friend and a professional surfer Taro Ishizeki dropped me a line if I was interested in doing an exhibit at his I-Surfer surfing school clubhouse located near Tsujido beach.
I had some new handplanes just about to be done so I said “Sure!”

So I grabbed all available handplanes and joined his exhibit for TZUMUJI summer wetsuits.
The main attraction of my handplane lineup was an art model with Kaokaopanda.

We had couple of visitors coming just to see her artwork and that was no surprise. Kaokaopanda’s artworks are bright, energetic and cheerful! I am very fortunate to be producing collaboration works with her.

Thanks again Taro for your support and thank you all for spending your time to see Mabo Handplanes!

Collaboration

Recently I had a pleasant chance to work with Kaokaopanda and came up with two beautiful handplanes.

Now I am happy to get a chance to shape a custom handplane for Shinsuke “Boma-Ye” Nakamura.

His mainline job is uh.. a professional wrestler and his charismatic presence thrills many of his fans in Japan and Mexico.
I am so stoked to be a part of his surfing life!

Shaping!!

Worked on a custom order handplane.

First, drew the outline using one of 3D-Moon templates. Luckily I have the chance to work on trimmed off foams that were made for longboards.

Taken down the outline. I am planning to turn the leftover foams into lampshades…. When I get around doing so.

Used my beloved TOSHIBA electric planer and some small-size Japanese planers to carve out nose rocker and tail rocker.

Created concave contour on the bottom. It’s always fun to imagine the water flowing through these concave. I often implement single concave around the entry rocker and double concave towards the tail to give planing effects and speed.

Complete and signed! I just have to hand this over to the glassing guru to add some magic to this handplane! Stoked!

Trending in Japan

I’ve noticed the rising interest towards handplanes in Japan. I think this trend has been brought by the great pioneers of this sport like Danny Hess and Ed Lewis.

One thing I am concerned about is that “are handplanes in Japan here to stay or just a fast trend?”

The recognition of handplanes in Japan was very low until just a few months ago. It was hard to explain what I was making just by saying “Yeah I make handplanes.”
I have seen handplanes being featured on “style magazines” in Japan and definitely the trend is there, but who exactly are out there bodysurfing in Japan?
Well for the love of the sport and infatuation with handplanes, I took a step ahead and held couple of handplaning lessons. Had a chance to team up with i-Surfer surf school and had a blast catching waves with bunch of us together. It was a pure stoke. Hope I get a chance to do more sessions with i-Surfer members.
